With your help, our grantees are moving forward with their lives. The Foundation is proud to have played a role in their success stories, some of which are illustrated here: |
Michael, (age 55), from Trumbull, suffers from Locked-In Syndrome due to a spinal-cord injury. OHHF purchased a new computer for Michael. "I don't know if you can understand just what a big deal it was giving me this laptop. As you know, I'm bed ridden, all I can do is watch TV, but with a computer the world opens to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you." |
Charles, (age 52), from Danielson, CT, requested help with the renovation of his bathroom so that he could access it with his wheelchair. With the guidance of a member of the Grants Committee, Charles located a contractor and his new bathroom became a reality. In his words, "May God bless you all — your kindness will not be forgotten." |
Pierina (age 16), from Darien, CT, is disabled due to a spinal tumor and needed a motorized scooter in order to navigate the halls of Darien High School. OHHF contacted the company that makes scooters and had them come to the high school so that Pierina could "test run" a model. Her new transportation enables her to be more independent and socially accessible to her classmates. |
"CC" (age 9), from Stamford, does not allow his disability to dampen his enthusiasm for athletics. OHHF purchased a new lightweight basketball wheelchair for CC and in his note of gratitude to us, he said, "It's really cool and it's awesome and I'm inviting you to every single game. When you come to my game, I promise I'll make a basket." |
Sarah (age 50), from Newtown, was a landscape designer prior to her accident. With a vehicle grant from OHHF, Sarah was able to resume her career. "Of course I never expected to be in this situation, but now I see how beneficial it is for people with spinal cord injuries to be treated so generously and thoughtfully. Thank you for all the good work that the Foundation does." |
Isabella, (age 5), from Norwalk, CT, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy as a baby. Each year her family cobbles together their own resources with insurance coverage to provide for Isabella's very expensive care. By the end of the year these resources are exhausted. At the end of 2008, OHHF granted Isabella's family several weeks of nursing care so that her mother was not forced to leave her job and lose her insurance. Also provided was a gift card at the local drugstore to cover the co-pays for Isabella's many medications. Isabella's mother said, "I will always be so thankful for all you have done for Isabella and our family." |
Ryan (age 30), from Cromwell, is a prior grantee to whom OHHF granted a computer in 2008 to help with his middle school teaching position and graduate school studies. Ryan also plays wheelchair basketball and this summer started a camp for young adults. OHHF was pleased to provide sponsorship funds for Ryan's camp in order to offset expenses for his campers. "The happiness of the athletes and their families was largely due to the generous support and encouragement of the Obie Harrington-Howes Foundation." |

And, a special note from a gentleman whom OHHF helped in 2003:
